How to Get an EIN for Your Business (Free, in 15 Minutes)
Apply for your EIN with the IRS for free. Step-by-step instructions plus what to do if you don't have an SSN.

Your Employer Identification Number (EIN) is a free, 9-digit ID from the IRS — like a Social Security Number for your business. Here's how to get one.
When you need an EIN
You need an EIN to open a business bank account, hire employees, file business taxes, or apply for most business licenses. Even single-member LLCs benefit from getting one to keep personal and business finances separate.
How to apply online (the fastest way)
Go to IRS.gov, click 'Apply for an EIN Online', complete the SS-4 form, and you'll get your EIN instantly. The service is open Monday–Friday, 7am–10pm ET.
What you need before applying
Your legal business name, formation state, responsible party's name and SSN/ITIN, business address, and a brief description of what your business does.
What to do if you don't have an SSN
Non-U.S. residents can still get an EIN. You'll need to submit Form SS-4 by fax or mail — it takes 4 business days by fax, 4 weeks by mail. We handle this for you on our Essential and Premium packages.
The IRS never charges for an EIN. If a site is asking you to pay $50+ just for the number itself, you're being overcharged.
